Afterpay and Qantas Frequent Flyer have formed a partnership that will allow QFF members to earn points on Afterpay transactions. The offer has tight limits, resembling a pilot program more than a full-blown commercial arrangement, but it breaks new ground for the buy now pay later sector.

As an introductory offer, QFF is offering members 500 points when they link their member number to an Afterpay account. The offer is limited to the first 50,000 QFF members who link up their QFF member number.

Ongoing, QFF members will receive one Qantas point per $1 spent on Afterpay, up to a limit of 5000 points in total – not enough for a flight.

An Afterpay spokesperson said the deal with QFF was its first foray into the rewards market. It is not working with any other financial institution on the deal and will not be issuing a co-branded card.

QFF claims 13 million members and Afterpay eight million active customers worldwide.
