"Banking Association of Australia" scam on again
If you're running a scam that relies on representing yourself as being from the non-existent "Banking Association of Australia" contacting Banking Day probably ranks as an error.Calls from the "Banking Association of Australia" were first reported in 2010 and appear to represent a sophisticated attempt to gain access to potential victims' bank accounts. One of our staffers was rung on Tuesday, over the worst phone connection we've had this year. The woman on the other end of the line assured Banking DAY that hers was "not a marketing call… not a sales call". She then started on a script that was likely aimed at extracting our staffer's bank account details, asking: "Which bank are you most happy with?"When our staffer asked for a phone number for the association the caller hung up.Heather Wellard from the (actually existing) Australian Bankers Association told Banking Day the scam has been reported to the Australian Federal Police.
