ABA governance expert says not all banks are on the same page
The independent governance expert overseeing the Australian Bankers Association's package of consumer protection, transparency and accountability initiatives has cautioned that member banks are interpreting the scope of some of the initiatives in different ways.Led by the ABA, the industry is reviewing product sales commissions, the way customer complaints are handled, the effectiveness of whistleblower protection, the Code of Banking Practice, the way employees who are guilty of poor conduct are dealt with and the level of support for the regulator ASIC.In his first report, the ABA's independent governance expert Ian McPhee said: "The banking industry has recognised it needs to do more to build confidence in the manner it delivers services and responds to community expectations that the behaviour of banks meets high ethical standards."McPhee said there needed to be "clarity of scope" for the initiatives to ensure the industry is able to deliver results. He said his role was to form an independent judgment of whether the industry is making progress towards delivering on its commitments. He warned that some of the initiatives were complex and had demanding timetables, which created the potential for "resource bottlenecks".
