ABA launches affordable banking website

16 July 2013 5:00PM
Only six banks have met the Australian Bankers' Association's criteria for inclusion in a new website that promotes affordable banking. The ABA worked with consumer and groups and financial counsellors to develop the site, affordablebanking.info, which has been designed to make it easier for low-income earners to find a basic bank account. The criteria they have established for a basic bank account include: no account keeping fees; free account statements; no minimum deposit; the ability to set up and cancel direct debits; no overdrawn fees; availability of a debit card at no extra cost; free and unlimited transactions through branches; and telephone banking, online and mobile.Among the ABA's membership, six banks made the cut with their basic accounts: ANZ, Citibank, Commonwealth Bank, ING Direct, NAB and Westpac. The ABA's chief executive, Steven Munchenberg, said most of the banks in the list had to make changes or add features to meet the criteria. He said the ABA was encouraging other banks to look at their offerings"We expect the number of accounts on the site to increase," Munchenberg said.Of the 135 personal transactions accounts in RateCity's database, there are 10 that offer no monthly account keeping fees and no transaction fees. There are 34 accounts with no monthly account fees, but they have a limit on the number of free transactions allowed. The accounts are intended for use by people who qualify for a concession card issued by the Australian Government, such as a Pensioner Concession Card, Health Care Card or a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card.Financial Counselling Australia issued a statement yesterday, saying it welcomed the launch of the new website.
