Account-switching reform having no impact
Bank account-switching rules introduced last year, which were designed to make it easier for consumers to move their transactions accounts, have had no impact, according to a customer survey.Researcher RFi found that the proportion of consumers who have switched their main transaction account since the new rules took effect last July has gone down. And RFi found that the number of consumers who had switched any of their transaction accounts over the past six months was unchanged from previous surveys, at five per cent. The intention to switch in the next 12 months was also down on previous surveys.RFi said the poor response could be a result of low awareness of the reforms.Under the arrangements introduced last year, the task of transferring direct entry arrangements from one financial provider to another passes from the customer to the financial institution. Customers sign a document authorising their new financial institution to execute the transfers on their behalf. This gives the new institution the authority to require the current provider to change payment arrangements.
