Amex co-brand card still soft for David Jones
Receivables on the David Jones American Express co-brand card remain on the disappointing side. The retailer said yesterday that receivables were A$333 million at July 2013.This is down from $383 million in mid-2008 - around the time David Jones phased out its own-brand charge card in favour of the Amex co-brand - and $374 million at January 2013. David Jones believes the card does have some traction, however, with one purchase in five in the department store being made using the Amex card. It said it has 390,000 active cards.Eighty per cent of card spending is outside David Jones. The retailer said earnings from financial services in the last half year were flat at $49.5 million, in line with the profit guarantee from Amex. These earnings will halve next year as this guarantee expires and David Jones and Amex share actual profits.Initiatives to support the profit include plans for a "pay with points" payment option for purchases made on David Jones' website from next year. This will be extended to all its stores in 2015.David Jones is now also selling gift cards at Australia Post and at other merchants.
