ANZ hires Phil Chronican
Phil Chronican will take over as chief executive of ANZ's Australian banking business from November, the bank said yesterday.Chronican, the former head of Westpac's institutional banking business, left that bank three months ago after four years in that post. He was presumed to be an unsuccessful candidate for the job as Westpac CEO in late 2007.He served as Westpac's chief financial officer for four years to 2005. Whether Chronican can make any claim to becoming ANZ CEO at a later date is an open question. Mike Smith, the incumbent, is only two years into the job and extensive operational and deal-making experience in Asia may be required for whoever eventually replaces Smith.Chronican's short-term task may be to work on the morale of line management in Australia, where there's a degree of cynicism over the absolute priority on ANZ's Asian aspirations, and which are reflected in a shortage of capital to pursue growth options for many domestic businesses.
