ANZ Mobile Pay a proprietary offering, not Android Pay

11 February 2016 5:00PM
The mobile payments app launched by ANZ yesterday is a proprietary product that has been in the works for over a year and not the Android Pay service that the bank announced in December. An ANZ spokesperson said the bank still planned to offer Google's Android Pay, which will be available some time this year. In the meantime it has put its own product into the market.ANZ customers with an Android smartphone can use the app to load their ANZ Visa and American Express credit cards and ANZ Visa debit cards and make contactless payment up to the value of $100.ANZ claims to offer the widest range of payments cards with such a facility. The app also allows customers to withdraw cash from contactless-enabled ATMs.Android Pay will enable MasterCard payments and is expected to have additional features, such as the ability to store gift cards, loyalty cards and special offers. There is plenty of activity in the mobile wallet market at the moment, with National Australia Bank launching its mobile payment service NAB Pay last month.NAB Pay also work on Android smartphones, allowing customers to load their Visa debit cards and make contactless payments with their phones.Last October American Express announced a global agreement with Apple to make Apple Pay available to Amex cardholders on iPhones, iPads and Apple Watches.
