ANZ open own Mal and Tony show
Getting 'Royal Commission ready' may be one motive behind ANZ's hiring of Tony Warren from Telstra as the bank's group general, manager communications and public affairs.Warren, a regulatory economics wonk, has held the corresponding job at Telstra since 2013 where, since 2007, he's carried some of the load for the telco's intricate (and commercially fruitful) dealings with the federal government over the National Broadband Network.A decade's work centred on the hottest topic in telecommunications generated plenty of close contact for Warren with key operators in the Turnbull government, including the prime minister himself, who was first shadow minister and then minister for communications. In canned quotes in ANZ's media release, the bank's chief executive Shayne Elliott wrote that "ANZ is committed to rebuilding our relationships with government, our customers and the wider community. Warren's appointment is an important sign we are focused on driving a culture of trust, integrity and character throughout the bank."Warren will settle into his new job at ANZ from the first week of October (based in Canberra) displacing, to a minor degree, a couple of bank veterans. Gerard Brown, ANZ's group general manager corporate affairs, and Paul Edwards, the bank's group general manager corporate communications will report to Warren rather than Elliott.
