ANZ sensitive on culture
ANZ has appointed Kathryn van der Merwe as group executive, talent and culture. In presenting the selection in a distinctive manner, the bank has made the routine replacement of its chief human resources officer Susie Babani into an artefact of the industry's response to conduct and culture controversies.Babani left ANZ in late 2016 for a "sabbatical" and a new pastime as a travel blogger. Her replacement joins ANZ from Bain & Company. The bank's summary of van der Merwe's recent career stated: "She has held senior leadership roles focused on business transformation. This includes a focus on strengthening organisational culture and capability, and the development and delivery of change strategies to improve performance and facilitate sustainable growth."Most recently van der Merwe was "expert vice president" for Bain's Results Delivery Practice in the Asia Pacific region ("expert", evidently, being Bain jargon).?ANZ's managing director, Shayne Elliott, spelled out some more key messages in the announcement.van der Merwe, he wrote, "is uniquely suited to ANZ's 21st Century challenges. Lower growth, technological change, heightened customer and community expectations, and increasing competition are necessitating rapid organisational change. "Culture, talent and the engagement of our people are the keys to unlocking ANZ's ability to rapidly adapt and to deliver a winning position in the eyes of our customers, shareholders and the community, " Elliott said.?van der Merwe will join ANZ from early May.
