Armidale folds away
One of the smallest of Australia's approved deposit-taking institutions pulled stumps yesterday. Armidale Building Society agreed to merge with Greater Building Society, adding a couple of branches to the Newcastle ADI's 66 branches. With $1.4 million in profit and $74 million in assets, Armidale is not folding up but transferring assets to Greater, which has more than $4 billion in assets. The merger gives Greater modest but potentially useful access to a customer list that enjoys the probable benefit of the region's association with the influential local member, Tony Windsor.
