ATM charges, credit card fees on most hated list
According to new research from ING Direct, ATM fees, monthly bank account fees and booking fees for events and tickets top the list of "most hated fees" amongst retail banking customers. Almost three quarters of people (72 per cent) who said they "hated" ATM fees told ING Direct the bad blood was because they believed the service should be free. The bad feeling over paying ATM fees was particularly strong amongst millennials and women, ING Direct research indicated.Nonetheless, it could be apathy more than anything that is costing Australians dearly when it comes to paying unnecessary fees, suggested John Arnott from ING Direct. "Australians 'waste' $500 million on ATM charges each year so it's no surprise that's the fee that tops the list. Our research shows almost all Australians will take some action to avoid ATM fees, but still too many people are paying. If you make two or three withdrawals a week, you are talking more than $300 a year," Arnott said.Other fees Australians said they find hardest to bear are: credit card surcharge and annual fees, airline booking fees, being charged for a hard copy bank statement to be mailed out and late payment fees - a result that will no doubt encourage class action lawyers.Interestingly, among the top five fees that Australians accept are some that are understandable, such as mobile data roaming charges and parking meter fees - along with currency conversion fees.
