ATM fees likely to remain in NZ
New Zealand banks look unlikely to follow the lead of their Big Four parent banks in scrapping ATM fees for customers using an ATM not belonging to their bank. Despite a call from Consumer NZ for banks there to consider scrapping the fee, banks in New Zealand say the cost and revenue structure of the ATM system differs from that in Australia. Westpac NZ said it was looking into the Australian decision, but the charging arrangements in New Zealand were more complex. ANZ spokesman Stefan Herrick said there was also high ATM accessibility in New Zealand, so it was easier for customers to avoid incurring the fee and few ANZ customers did so. The fee charged is lower than in Australia. The usual charge across the banks is NZ$1 to use another bank's ATM (apart from TSB Bank customers, who can use any other bank's ATMs for free, and Co-operative customers who are not charged for using Westpac ATMs). Massey University banking lecturer David Tripe told RNZ that, unlike in Australia, the fees imposed had "borne some relation to the cost" incurred by banks so it would be harder to argue it was an unreasonable charge.
