ATM skimmers hit Brisbane
23 November 2012 5:09PM
Police have warned the public to be "vigilant" when using ATMs after two bank card skimming devices were found attached to central Brisbane ATMs.Detective Superintendent Brian Hay of the Queensland Police fraud squad was quoted by News Limited newspapers as saying this was the first time such devices had been seen by police in Australia. The skimming devices are used to steal and then use identification data from financial institutions' cards. Those detected in Brisbane yesterday fit over the ATM card slot and read the card data while filming the user keying in the card's PIN.Once this information has been obtained, it is used in various ways to take money from the customer's account.Queensland Police said in a statement that "it is believed that all information data obtained by the skimming devices has been retrieved by police and [the] security of the credit card details has not been compromised."The Australian Bankers' Association used media yesterday to remind consumers that banks absorb the losses from such fraudulent transactions and so have an incentive to stop the fraud.
