ATM skimming on the increase in Sydney

29 April 2014 3:39PM
There has been a marked increase in the incidence of ATM skimming in Sydney since the beginning of the year, according to New South Wales Police.More than 40 ATMs have been targeted in a number of suburbs. A NSW Police media statement said Fraud and Cybercrime Squad detectives believed the skimming was the work of an organised group. Last month, police arrested two men for allegedly tampering with an ATM in the Sydney CBD. Police said there were more group members still operating. The skimming devices used by the group are capable of copying card details while a tiny video camera records people entering their PIN numbers.A copy of the card is then made, with all of the functions of the original.Police warned consumers to cover their hand when entering their PIN and to check transaction records regularly.
