ATM transactions near 10-year lows
ATM transactions fell heavily in February, with both the number and value of transactions down to levels last seen almost a decade ago.According to Reserve Bank figures released yesterday, there were 57.3 million cash withdrawals from ATMs in February - down seven per cent from 61.6 million in January. The last time the RBA reported ATM transaction numbers below 60 million a month was in February 2005.The value of ATM cash withdrawals in February was A$10.8 billion - down nine per cent from $11.9 billion in January.The last time transaction values fell below $11 billion a month was in February 2007.ATM operators report that their earnings are being eroded by this decline. Last month DC Payments, which operates the DirectCash ATM fleet, reported that gross profit per ATM fell from $2704 to $2665 over the 12 months to December.Some good news for the sector is that a growing number of ATM network operators are signing deals with the payment card issuer China UnionPay to allow UnionPay cardholders to use local ATMs. The payments company Cuscal announced yesterday that it had established an ATM access partnership with UnionPay, providing UnionPay cardholders with access to Cuscal's rediATM network.
