Audit chief McPhee now a banking watchdog
Ian McPhee, the former head of the Australian National Audit Office, will assist the Australian Bankers Association implement recently announced measures by banks to protect consumer interests.McPhee led the ANAO from 2005 to 2015. He "will report quarterly on the industry's progress, with the first report to be released by 21 July 2016," the ABA said on Friday in a media release.Last month the ABA announced that it would set up an independent review of product sales commissions and product based payments, with a view to removing or changing them where they could lead to poor customer outcomes.The bankers' lobby said: "McPhee's role will continue until the industry's commitments have been substantially implemented."The ABA shared the letter of engagement provided to McPhee. Asked to disclose his fee, the ABA responded that it was confidential.The ABA informed McPhee that "to enable this to work effectively, the industry will work with you to ensure: the initiatives are specifically and clearly defined; roles and responsibilities for the initiatives are clearly set out; and specific milestones and target dates are established, against which progress can be measured and reported."
