Austrac forms new cyber security team

The anti-money laundering regulator Austrac has established a new cyber security team dedicated to identifying online terrorism financing activity, money laundering and financial fraud.The Minister for Justice Michael Keenan announced this week that the new team would use cyber intelligence to investigate online payment platforms.Austrac will work with iDcare, a national identity support service, and the Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network to identify patterns and trends that could indicate scams.Keenan said in a media release: "We know the use of fraudulent identities continues to be a key enabler of organized crime and terrorism."One project the new team will undertake is to work with iDcare to target job recruitment scams that organised crime groups use to recruit innocent people as money mules.
