Australian bank fees class action scheduled for December hearing
A claim against ANZ, on behalf of 38,000 customers, for the repayment of "unconscionable" exception fees will be heard in the Federal Court in Melbourne in December.The hearing date will be two years after the Federal Court ruled on which of 17 fees could be classified as penalties, and more than a year after the High Court ruled on an appeal against the Federal Court ruling.In total, law firm Maurice Blackburn is preparing claims against eight banks on behalf of 170,000 customers, claiming repayment of fees worth more than A$200 million. The ANZ case is likely to run its course before any other litigation gets underway.
