Bankwest launches Australia's first rewards transaction account
Just weeks after launching a platinum debit card, Bankwest has added a rewards transaction account to its product range. Customers will earn points on purchases and on their average monthly balance. The new account, which is a first in the Australian market, will be available to current Bankwest account-holders as well as to new customers.Bankwest did not reveal the earn rate or redemption rate on the scheme. The bank's retail chief executive, Vittoria Shortt, conceded that the earn rate was not as generous as the average credit card reward program. The bank has set up an online calculator to give consumers an idea of what they could earn. Account-holders who deposit A$2000 a month and use the account for regular transactions would earn a voucher worth about $25 over a year.According to the Reserve Bank, credit card users who spend an average of $18,000 earn a $100 reward.Points are available on "eligible purchases", which means transfers between accounts will not earn points.Account-holders must deposit a minimum of $2000 a month to avoid account fees. The account offers unlimited transactions. One surprising feature of the offer is that points expire after three years. Consumers don't like expiry dates and they are not common these days. Shortt said: "We would like to see consumers use the points. Three years is a long enough period of time to accumulate them."Customers can link their transaction account points with points they earn on a Bankwest credit card. They can also use the platinum debit card to operate the transaction account. The MasterCard platinum debit provides access to MasterCard's 24/7 Platinum Concierge Service, a 12-month extended warranty on purchases and worldwide purchase security protection. It also provides access to MasterCard's Priceless Sydney program, which includes exclusive hotel, dining, retail and sporting event offers.
