BankWest shaves credit card spreads
New customers of the BankWest Lite MasterCard will now pay an introductory interest rate of 6.99 per cent on purchases for the first 12 months, before reverting to the variable 9.89 per cent existing customers are currently paying.A 2.99 per cent interest rate on balance transfers for the first six months is another carrot to attract new customers to the card, which offers up to 55 days interest free, charges a $59 annual fee and a cash advance rate of 20.49 per cent.BankWest share of credit card balances has remained stagnant in the 12 months to July 2007 at 1.7 per cent, after the bank enjoyed a strong increase from 1.1 per cent at July 2005 to 1.7 per cent at July 2006, according to the Australian Payment Cards Report July 2007 prepared by Michael Ebstein at MWE Consulting.HSBC is the fast growing bank in this segment, particularly in recent months.
