Basel regulators agree rule details
Regulators have agreed on key details of the Basel III system of rules on capital and liquidity, the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision said yesterday after a meeting in Basel. In a statement after the meeting, the Committee said it expects to publish the Basel III rules text by the end of this year. At the same time it plans to release summary results of its "comprehensive quantitative impact study" of the effect on banks of the new rules. The agreement on details follows the in-principle support given to the rules by the G20 nations when they met two weeks ago in Seoul. But there are no indications yet of a final decision on how Basel III will deal with liquidity ratios for Australia and other low-debt countries. That decision is still not expected until the end of December.
