Brief: Big Four blindsided by Kiwi capital plan
Before releasing its proposals to force New Zealand's banks to hold significantly more capital, the RBNZ warned the government the banks would be taken by surprise and that it should expect "intensive lobbying" from them as a result. The warning was contained in a memo to Finance Minister Grant Robertson, businessdesk reports. A later memo, from last month, reveals the response to the public consultation on the proposals. "We are getting more submissions from the general public than we would normally expect for a consultation such as this, and most have been supportive," the regulator says in the memo.
