Brief: Early access to KiwiSaver approved
New Zealanders with certain life-shortening congenital conditions will be allowed to withdraw their KiwiSaver funds early, rather than waiting till age 65. The decision announced by Commerce Minister Kris Faafoi follows a submission to a parliamentary select committee by Auckland man Tim Fairhall, who has Down Syndrome and has worked in a supermarket for 15 years. Faafoi said there would be a set list of conditions that would automatically qualify people for early withdrawal, but there would also be a process for people with life-shortening congenital conditions not named to apply to access their super savings.
