Brief: Little Kiwi sympathy for the Big Four
The grumpiness of the Big Four banks with the tough stance of Reserve Bank governor Adrian Orr is unlikely to find a receptive ear within the New Zealand government. Kiwi Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has been visiting Melbourne and told a group of investors that the topic of tougher capital requirements for the banks (and threats by ANZ and others to pull out of NZ) would "not necessarily" come up in her talks with counterpart Scott Morrison as it was an issue for the RBNZ - although she pointed out that her predecessor Bill English had described such threats in the past as "scaremongering". Newsroom reports that Ardern's former political mentor Annette King, who is now the NZ High Commissioner to Australia, cheerfully chimed in that English had said: "call their bluff".
