Briefs: Data breaches over-reported, MCU considering joining Alliance
In the six weeks after the Commonwealth Government's notifiable data breach scheme came into force, it received 63 reports of data breaches, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner has revealed. Given that the first quarterly report from the OAIC covered the period between the scheme's start date of February 22 to March 31, the number was "a stark contrast" to the 114 voluntary notifications for data breaches received by the OAIC in the 2016/17 financial year, before the scheme was in place. Some interesting figures from the OAIC's report: 24 per cent of notifications were from health service providers; legal, accounting and financial services providers accounted for a further 16 per cent. Human error was responsible for 51 per cent of breaches, while a further 44 per cent were due to malicious or criminal attacks. Of the 63 breaches, 37 involved just one person - but three of them affected more than 10,000 individuals. MCU Ltd - Maleny Credit Union - has told members it is likely to hold a special general meeting in late July to consider becoming a franchise of Alliance Bank. if MCU members agree, they will become the sixth credit union to fit under the wing of Bendigo and Adelaide Bank's Alliance arm. Nova Credit Union in Newcastle was the most recent to do so earlier this year.
