Briefs: Amex and Cash Converters awarded Shonkys, AFMA re-elects Big Four as prime banks
Two financial services companies, American Express and Cash Converters, have been included in Choice's 2016 Shonky Awards. Amex was singled out by the consumer group for backing the Surcharge Free campaign, while charging merchant fees that are twice as high as those charged by Visa and MasterCard (in most cases a surcharge is recovery of the cost of the merchant fee). Cash Converters got its lemon for launching a household budgeting website commoncents.com.au, which directs consumers to cashconverters.com.au for a payday loan. The Australian Financial Markets Association has re-elected ANZ, Commonwealth Bank, NAB and Westpac as prime banks. The association concluded its 2016 prime bank survey and re-elected all existing prime banks. There has been no other bank on the list since 2012, when BNP Paribas requested that it be removed. The main criterion for prime bank status is that a bank's short-term securities are recognised as being of the highest quality with regard to liquidity, credit and consistency of yield. Prime banks provide the basis for discovery of short-term interbank interest rates, such as the BBSW benchmark.
