Briefs: Up up and away, NAB branch manager banned, Westpac launches mobile cheque deposit
Following a two-month beta trial with over 1,500 customers, digital neo-bank Up has officially launched. Up is backed by Bendigo and Adelaide Bank which developed it in conjunction with Melbourne tech firm Ferocia, which also developed Bendigo's regular banking app. Bendigo provides all the licensed financial products for the Up app. Up users can instantly provision a "digital card" to use with Apple Pay, Google Pay, Garmin Pay and Fitbit Pay. It has no account fees or international purchase fees, and cash withdrawals are free from most Australian ATMs. ASIC has banned a fourth former NAB employee over abuse of the bank's introducer home loan referral scheme. Former branch manager Mathew Alwan has been permanently barred from engaging in credit activities and providing financial services. The ban results from an extensive ASIC investigation into fraudulent activities by NAB employees in Western Sydney who were accepting false documents and falsely attributing loans to "introducers" in order to obtain and share commission payments. Westpac has launched its mobile cheque deposit feature for both iPhone and android users, enabling them to deposit up to A$1000 a week by taking a photo of the front and back of a cheque. Westpac says the money will be in users' accounts within three days.
