Cashcard, ACCC to give ATM deal 10 more years
An application by Cashcard to continue an agreement with three credit unions and two banks not to charge each other's cardholders a fee for transactions at their respective ATMs for ten years has been granted interim authorisation by Australia's competition regulator. The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission first authorised the proposed arrangements by the group, known as FeeSmart, in 2009.The arrangement will "assist in addressing the competitive disadvantage that FeeSmart members might otherwise face in providing ATM services to cardholders compared to the big banks," Michael Schaper, ACCC deputy chair said in a media release. The FeeSmart members are Cashcard, Qantas Credit Union, Southern Cross Credit Union, Macquarie Securitisation, Bank of China and Gateway Credit Union. Its combined network of around 4100 ATMs is almost wholly accounted for by Cashcard. The ACCC said it is accepting submissions on the draft determination from "interested parties" until 4 July.
