CBA tops banking ad spend in 2010
Commonwealth Bank, Westpac and the ANZ have made the top 25 biggest advertisers' list for 2010. According to data from Nielsen's Top Media Advertisers report, for the calendar year 2010, the CBA retained its spot as biggest spender in the banking category at A$77.3 million for the year. CBA increased its as spend by 13 per cent in 2010, but dropped to 12, from 11, in the ranking of the top advertisers.Westpac trimmed its ad spend by 0.3 per cent over the year, to $61.8 million. It fell to 21 in the Nielsen rankings, from 14, among big spenders on advertising.ANZ increased its spending by 11 per cent, to $55.6 million. "As the advertising recovery gained momentum in the first half of 2010, there were substantial year-on-year increases in activity particularly among the major spending categories that were most impacted by the advertising cutbacks of 2009," said Peter Cornelius, managing director, Media, at Nielsen Australia. Overall, Australia's biggest brands pushed an advertising spend rebound that hit an estimated $10 billion plus.The finance category came in at number four for biggest ad spend, rebounding by 13 per cent over 2010 and outlaying $637 million for the year.Within the finance category, the biggest advertising investment was on sponsorships, which accounted for 24 per cent of spending, and recorded 40 per cent growth from 2009.Credit and debit cards was the product category to attract the most investment in ad spend, and accounted for 19 per cent of all spending.Personal banking and related services accounted for 15 per cent of spending, with less spent on this category last year.
