Cheque use has halved over the past five years
Cheque account holders wrote an average of 9.7 million cheques a month in the year to June - down 16.4 per cent on the previous year, according to the latest Reserve Bank cheque payment data.Cheque usage fell 16.2 per cent in 2014/15 and 14.7 per cent in 2013/14.The number of cheques has more than halved since 2010/11, when customers wrote an average of 21.7 million a month.The value of cheques drawn in the year to June was an average of A$49 billion a month - down 7.7 per cent from $53.1 billion a month in 2014/15.The average monthly value was $57.1 billion in 2013/14, $60.2 billion a month in 2012/13, $66.7 billion in 2011/12 and $73.7 billion in 2010/11.
