China Construction Bank receives an NZ banking licence
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand has registered China Construction Bank as a bank in New Zealand, making it the second of China's major banks to register in New Zealand. Industrial and Commercial Bank of China was registered in November last year.CCB China said it would be chaired by former National Prime Minister Jenny Shipley. Former PwC New Zealand chair John Shewan would chair the bank's audit committee. ICBC NZ is chaired by former Reserve Bank governor and National Party leader Don Brash. CCB NZ said it would offer corporate and retail banking services to both Chinese and New Zealand customers, and the registration fulfilled an important step in the group's globalisation push.It pointed to China becoming New Zealand's largest trading partner last year and a targeted doubling of two-way trade to NZ$30 billion by 2020 as factors in its move into New Zealand. China was also New Zealand's second largest source of tourists and there were now 200,000 Chinese people living in New Zealand, CCB NZ said.CCB NZ said it would focus on Chinese companies operating in New Zealand and on New Zealand companies trading and investing in China."CCB NZ will also pursue opportunities to participate in large scale construction projects (for example, infrastructure development projects)," it said. CCB said it would initially focus on wholesale banking business, including deposits, syndicated loans, bilateral loans and trade finance products such as letters of credit, forfeiting, trust receipt loans and factoring.
