Clyne reassures union on jobs
National Australia Bank chief executive Cameron Clyne has told the Finance Sector Union that the bank has no plans to cut jobs. FSU national secretary Leon Carter issued a statement on Tuesday, providing details of a discussion with Clyne last week.According to the statement: "Mr Clyne was quick to douse media speculation about big job losses at NAB, saying the bank had no plans to slash jobs."Mr Clyne went on to say that he acknowledged that the Australian business was in good shape and it would be a mistake to make big cuts here in response to problems overseas. He went on to say that incremental change would continue as the bank sought to control costs and improve efficiency."NAB cut 1309 jobs in the 2011/12 financial year, as it sought to improve efficiency in response to sluggish domestic growth and problems in the UK.The four big banks cut a total of more than 3500 jobs last yearCarter said: "While the FSU accepts Mr Clyne's assurances in good faith, the union will continue to monitor the restructuring at NAB.
