Comment: Sydney costs baked into banking

12 November 2015 4:42PM
Better than $3 million is a credible pay packet at the head offices of Westpac, with Phil Coffey, the deputy CEO at the head of this pack.Westpac is not shy in paying up for talent, with John Arthur, Brad Cooper and George Frazis also in this "super threes" club.A Kelly gang if ever there was one, its actors' only rationale if they harboured doubts on the longevity of their jobs. The CRO and CFO roles at Westpac hover at $2.5 million.Clearly Westpac's Sydney roots entrench high cost assumptions. The overspend in the c-suite at the bank is one assumption that could give way. Moreover it will not be the only overlooked cost saving in a culture approaching its costs challenge in a hopelessly uncoordinated manner.Bankers with a clearer record to reform cost less than this.Earnings for banking group leaders at ANZ congregated around A$2.6.Andrew Geczy topped the bucks at $2.9 million. Deputy CEO Graham Hodges trailed this pack with $1.8 million as his return.
