Contactless usage low
Only a small number of people with contactless payment cards have used them, according to new research.A survey of consumers by banking research company RFi found that awareness of contactless payments was high, at 69 per cent, and 19 per cent of people had a contactless card. But only seven percent of people with a contactless card have used it.And, at this stage, contactless payments are having very little impact on the volume of cash payments. Only six per cent of people using contactless cards said they were using cash less as a consequence.Usage levels among young people are much higher than the average, however. Thirty per cent of people aged 18 to 24 said they had a contactless card and 14 per cent said they were using them. RFi's director of consulting, Alan Shields, said a risk for issuers of contactless cards is that the technology will be overtaken by smartphone technology."Younger consumers are much more likely to prefer contactless-enabled smartphones," Shields said.
