Credit card demand weakens further
The weak trend in credit card spending that has shown up in Reserve Bank figures over the past year looks likely to continue. Veda Advantage reported yesterday that applications for credit cards in the March quarter were down two per cent on the same quarter last year.The latest Veda Consumer Credit Demand Index, which is based on an analysis of credit inquiries, revealed a slight rise in demand for personal loans in the March quarter - up three per cent on the same period last year.Overall, consumer credit demand rose 0.4 in the March quarter. Demand declined throughout 2010 and shows no sign of picking up this year.Veda also reported that a survey conducted for its Australian Debt Study Report found that 61 per cent of people with a credit card intended to reduce the debt on their card over the next six months.Forty-four per cent said they planned to pay off their credit card balances completely. Only two per cent of people said they would be applying for a limit increase.The number of people concerned about the cost of living and their ability repay debt has increased, says the report.
