Credit card spending on the rise
Credit card spending is returning to long-term growth rates, after flattening out in 2009 and much of 2010. MWE Consulting's analysis of the latest Reserve Bank credit and charge card data, published yesterday, shows credit card spending increasing by $2.2 billion (or 11.4 per cent) from October to November last year - one of the strongest monthly increases in spending in recent years.MWE says the $21.9 billion of spending on credit cards in November was the second highest monthly spend on record.Average credit and change card balances increased by $2716 over the 12 months to November. This was more than double the growth of $1250 in the 12 months to November 2009.The average credit limit has increased 2.5 per cent from $8793 to $9016 over the past year. The number of purchases per account rose from 103 in the year to November 2009 to 107 in the year to November 2010. Over the same period the number of cash advances per account fell from 2.12 to 1.92.The revolve rate increased from 72.7 per cent to 72.9 per cent over the past year.
