Credit cards still popular payment instruments, less popular finance tools
Consumers are taking their credit cards out of their wallets more often than they did a year ago but they are not allowing balances to accumulate at the same rate.According to the latest Reserve Bank credit and charge card data, consumers used their cards for purchases an average of 12.5 times in March, spending an average of A$124.15 each time.Balances accruing interest in March were worth $32.7 billion - an average of $1990 per account.At the same time last year consumers used their credit and charge cards an average of 11.9 times a month, spending $134.12 each time.Balances accruing interest in March last year were worth $33 billion - an average of $2073 per account.Consumers used their debit cards for purchases an average of 9.3 times in March, spending an average of $51.91 each time. In the same month last year consumers used their debit card for purchases an average of 8.5 times, spending an average of $53.89 each time.
