Credit reporting agencies have an obligation to be accurate
Credit reporting agencies will only be required to remove or amend information they have recorded about an individual if the information is incorrect, according to the Financial Ombudsman Service.FOS has issued a notice clarifying its approach to dealing with complaints involving credit reporting agencies. With the changes to the credit reporting rules earlier this year, there has been a heightened consumer focus on the role of the agencies in the credit process. Some credit repair companies have been accused of creating confusion by promoting the idea that they can get negative listings removed from credit files.FOS said it would consider a dispute lodged against an agency when the issue is whether the information recorded by the agency is accurate and up-to-date."For example, a dispute may arise about whether default information has been recorded against the right person," it said.Agencies, such as Veda, Dun & Bradstreet and Experian, have an obligation to ensure that the information in their credit reports accurately reflects the information supplied by credit providers. However, agencies do not provide finance or undertake collections and primary responsibility for these areas is with the credit provider, FOS said.
