Debit card growth outpaces credit in 2013/14
Spending on debit cards grew at almost twice the rate of growth in spending on credit and charge cards during the 2013/14 financial year. Growth in the number of debit card accounts also outpaced growth in credit and charge card accounts.According to the latest Reserve Bank card payment data, the average value of purchases on credit and charge cards during the year to June was A$22.5 billion a month - an increase of 6.1 per cent over the average spend of $21.2 billion a month during the 2012/13 financial year.The average value of purchases on debit cards during the year to June was $16.4 billion a month - an increase of 9.8 per cent over average debit card purchases of $14.9 billion a month during 2012/13.While spending on credit and charge cards grew at a steady pace, the value of balances accruing interest fell during the year.The average value of balances accruing interest during the 2013/14 financial year was $34.6 billion a month, compared with an average of $35.6 billion a month in 2012/13.The average balance accruing interest per card fell from $2272 at the end of the 2012/13 financial year to $2245 at the end June.The number of credit and charge card accounts increased by 0.7 per cent to 15.5 million, while the number of debit card accounts increased by 5.4 per cent to 38.8 million.
