Eastern openings for BankWest
BankWest appears to be having little difficulty managing the two big risks in its ambitious eastern states branch rollout - suitable sites and staff.BankWest retail chief executive Ian Corfield said yesterday the bank had locked in all the locations for branch openings out to the end of the first quarter next year and it had recruited all the people it needed to staff branches that would open this year.Corfield was speaking at a media event for the "opening" of BankWest's Parramatta branch, located in a Westfield Shoppingtown. The bank has also opened a branch in the western Sydney suburb of Mt Druitt.Branches (the bank prefers to call them stores) will open in the Sydney suburbs of Burwood, Bondi Junction, Hornsby, Miranda and Chatswood this year. All will be located in Westfield centres. The first Melbourne branch will be in Bourke Street Mall and will be opened early next year. The bank is still looking at sites in Queensland.Corfield said the bank was on track to have 40 or 50 branches open by the end of next year.He said staffing was not a problem. The bank has received hundreds of unsolicited CVs since BankWest announced its expansion plan.Half the new recruits come from banking backgrounds and half are from the retail industry. Corfield said: "People want to be part of this. They want to join us in taking on the big four."BankWest head of change management for retail, Andy Weir, said one reason the bank had found sites relatively easily was because it was operating seven days a week. Branches will be open, with full teller services, from 9am to 5.30pm weekdays, late night Thursdays, 9am to 5pm on Saturdays and 10am to 5pm Sundays.Weir said: "Shopping centre owners can be reluctant to deal with banks because the branches are closed on the main shopping days. Because we are trading seven days we are being offered good spots in the centres."Our focus is not solely on shopping centres. We are looking for high street locations as well."The most distinctive feature of the open plan space is the open teller pods. Corfield said BankWest would have the biggest rollout of teller cash recyclers in Australia. "We have had a security [consultant] take a look at them and we have held talks with the union. We are satisfied that the system will be very safe."The customer-friendly trappings include toy drawers, lounge seating, coffee making facilities and merchandise such as finance books and wallets.
