eftpos contactless card close to market
An eftpos contactless card will hit the market some time during next year and is currently undergoing internal trials with a number of the payment company's members.According to eftpos managing direct Bruce Mansfield, "several organisations" are working on the commercialisation of the card. The card incorporates a chip that allows for a multi-network approach to contactless payments. This means consumers and merchants will be able to choose the eftpos network or a card scheme network for contactless payments.Contactless technology is one of a number of projects eftpos has been working on over the past couple of years in order to keep pace with innovations in the payment system.Speaking at an FST Media payment conference yesterday, Mansfield told delegates: "On current trends and our projections, new technology platforms will see about 55 per cent of transactions routed through international commercial schemes by 2020 compared with about 32 per cent today."In terms of scheme fees, this could be a significant loss to the economy."eftpos represents about half of card transactions - credit, charge and debit - in Australia, and these are worth about A$130 billion a year.Mansfield said: "Our growth rates are slowing as more people use online, mobile and contactless payments. We are determined to deliver viable, local options on these platforms."
