Eftpos enters the rewards game

21 December 2012 5:46PM
Payment system group Eftpos Payments Australia has launched a new rewards program aimed at encouraging consumers to take their debit card spending upmarket.Over the coming month, consumers who use a debit card to pay for a meal in a participating cafe or restaurants will be offered a complimentary glass of wine.To get the reward, consumers will have to hit the "cheque" or "savings" button on the point of sale terminal, so that the payment goes through the Eftpos network. (If they press "credit", the payment goes through the scheme debit network.)To participate in the scheme, consumers must also download a free app called Rewardle.Eftpos has signed up 60 participants in Sydney and Melbourne.Reward programs are usually offered by card issuers, but this one is being offered by Eftpos and will be available to all debit card users. An Eftpos spokesman said the company would meet the cost of the program and there would be no extra merchant or consumer fees.Eftpos managing director Bruce Mansfield said in a statement that the rationale for the scheme was to get consumers to use their debit cards in restaurants. Consumers generally use debit cards for everyday spending - buying groceries and petrol. When they go to restaurants, they are more likely to use a credit card, even if they have funds available in their transaction account. Eftpos is hoping to change this behaviour.
