First-home buyers getting scarcer
The number of first-home buyers in the mortgage market fell further in November, according to the latest AFG mortgage report. First-home buyers accounted for 10.3 per cent of the business written by AFG brokers last month - down from 11.1 per cent in October.Twelve months ago, first-home buyers accounted for 15.4 per cent of AFG's business.In New South Wales, just 2.8 per cent of loans were for first-home buyers.The steep fall has been attributed to the rising cost of real estate, increased investor demand crowding out first-home buyers and changes to state first-home grant schemes.After several months of strong growth, AFG came back to Earth last month. The number of loans written fell from 9597 in October to 9162 in November.The value of loans written fell from A$4.06 billion to $3.9 billion.The average loan size was $436,000, compared with an average of $422,000 in October.
