Foreign news: Bank of China boosts HK business unit, PayPal hit with class action
The Bank of China's Hong Kong business unit has agreed to buy its parent's branches in Indonesia and Cambodia for a combined HK$2.9 billion, part of BOC's broader strategy to turn its Hong Kong arm into a hub for business in ASEAN countries, Chinese online news service Caixin reports. Last year the Jakarta and Phnom Penh branches both reported healthy increases in after-tax profit. A class action lawsuit filed in Illinois this week alleges that PayPal misled tens of thousands of people about charitable donations made via the company's Giving Fund, according to a US National Public Radio report. The lawsuit alleges that when a donation is made to a charity listed on its website, but the recipient is not registered with PayPal, the payments firm will keep the funds for six months rather than trying to inform charities that there are funds waiting for them. Meanwhile, the donor receives a misleading confirmation that their donation went through, and PayPal accrues interest on the donation for six months before redirecting it to another group, the suit alleges.
