Foreign news: Citi drops 'thankyou' case, call to stop branch closures in the UK
Citigroup and telecommunications giant AT&T have settled their dispute over use of the word "thanks", Reuters reports. Citi took AT&T to court in the US, claiming its use of the tag line "AT&T thanks" as part of a customer loyalty program was too similar to the "thankyou" tag Citi has used with its customer loyalty program since 2004. AT&T said it would defend the claim, arguing that no one could trademark the words "thanks" or "thank you". On Monday Citi dropped the claim. Banks in the United Kingdom have closed 1700 branches over the past five years, The Guardian reports. The Campaign for Community Banking Service has called on the big UK banks to stop the closures, saying about 1500 communities no longer have a high street bank branch. Going against the trend, Metro Bank was launched in 2010 and has opened 41 branches since then.
