Foreign news: Fiji targets financial exclusion
The governor of the Reserve Bank of Fiji, Barry Whiteside, has announced a national workshop to analyse the work of the country's National Financial Inclusion Taskforce over the past five years and formulate a new strategy. Speaking in Suva last week, Whiteside presented the results of a survey of financial exclusion in Fiji. Some of the findings were: 27 per cent of adult Fijians are completely excluded from any type of financial service; exclusion is greater among women, people aged 15 to 20 and casual and agricultural workers; 71 per cent of adults saved some money during the previous year but, of those who saved, only 38 per cent saved with a financial institution; and only 32 per cent of Fijians use credit.
