Foreign News: Millennials go mobile, Singapore finsec plan, cheque changes in the UK

31 October 2017 5:42PM
A survey of 2000 Brits carried out by Visa found that 53 per cent of 18 to 34 year olds regularly use banking apps. Across all age groups, 38 per cent of Brits regularly bank with apps, Finextra reports. The percentage of 18 to 34 year olds who have made a peer-to-peer digital payment with a mobile device sits at 59 per cent, compared to just over a third across all age groups. The Monetary Authority of Singapore has unveiled a plan to create 4,000 new jobs in financial services and financial technology, reports Bloomberg. Using an "industry transformation map for financial services", Singapore hopes to become: an international wealth management hub; an Asian hub for asset management where more funds are domiciled; and a "global foreign exchange price discovery and liquidity centre in the Asian time zone."  It takes six working days to process a cheque in the UK, but a new image-based cheque clearing system should cut that to just one day, reports Finextra. The new system, trialled since legislative changes to enable cheque imaging came into force in July 2016, means banks will be able to accept and clear cheque images drawn from their peers. However, not all banks will come online until late 2018, meaning two cheque clearing systems will be running in parallel and those relying on banks still using the old paper-based system will have to wait those six working days for funds to clear. Last year, 477 million cheques were written in the UK.
