It takes six working days to process a cheque in the UK, but a new image-based cheque clearing system should cut that to just one day, reports Finextra. The new system, trialled since legislative changes to enable cheque imaging came into force in July 2016, means banks will be able to accept and clear cheque images drawn from their peers. However, not all banks will come online until late 2018, meaning two cheque clearing systems will be running in parallel and those relying on banks still using the old paper-based system will have to wait those six working days for funds to clear. Last year, 477 million cheques were written in the UK.
