FSU chooses a leader with a plan
The Financial Services Union's national assistant secretary, Geoff Derrick, via a media release yesterday, confirmed the FSU's national executive has unanimously accepted his recommendation to appoint Julia Angrisano, secretary of the NSW/ACT branch, to the vacant position of national secretary for the remainder of the current term of office, which runs until 31 July 2018.Angrisano (pictured - Source: FSU website) will take over an important role that has been left unfilled since 1 July, when the FSU's previous national secretary, Fiona Jordan, resigned a month short of her second anniversary. The union, which represents 30,000 banking, finance and insurance sector workers, is one of Australia's largest.Jordan's departure was an unavoidable outcome after her plans to reform the union were effectively blocked amid a damaging internal conflict between herself and other committee members and executives of the union over restructuring. In contrast, changes that Angrisano took to the FSU national conference last year have seen the introduction of more staff training, along with a new advocacy and workplace rights stream that co-ordinates the work of the MRC."Julia has extensive experience with our union as an organiser, national industrial officer, national director and local executive secretary," wrote Derrick. "She has a clear view about the direction of our union."
