FSU members vote for new leadership
An insurgency led by a Westpac home finance manager from Camberwell has resulted in a change of leadership at the Finance Sector Union.Fiona Jordan, national president of the FSU, deposed Leon Carter as FSU national secretary.Jordan won the ballot with 3485 votes to 2263, with 34 informal votes. Turnout was low at only 16 per cent.Louise Arnfield, who works for Commonwealth Bank, will become the new national president. All members of the FSU national executive apart from Jordan backed Carter.Jordan had a thin platform, based on escalating doubt over the financial analysis behind a sale and leaseback deal for the union's Melbourne headquarters. She also argued that the union's leadership had become less responsive to the needs of members, and that there should be fewer head office managers and more workplace organisers. She promised greater consultation with members on major decisions, the restoration of a national enforcement unit to oversee all individual members' cases and the establishment of a dedicated OHS unit.Jordan's success puts a new light on recent claims by banks of high staff morale and an engaged workforce.
